Harstad Kulturhus
Harstad Kulturhus is Northern Norway's largest and because Festspillene i Nord-Norge (Arts Festival of North Norway) is held her, Harstad has established itself as the cultural centre in the north.
Harstad Kulturhus gives inspiration to the cultural life of the town and region and new possibilities for Northern Norway. The Arts Centre has hosted guest performances by orchestras, theatre, opera and ballet companies.
Harstad Kulturhus was completed in June 1992 and consists of: - A large concert hall for 1000 people with stage facilities and orchestra pit - A small concert hall for 200 people - A library with 60.000 books - Forsvarets distriktsmusikkorps Nord-Norge (the North Norwegian Military Corps) - Arctimus (the North Norwegian Ensemble) - The Arts Festival of North Norway and administration for the Arts Centre - Quality Arcticus Hotel with 75 rooms - A restaurant and two bars - Congress and meeting facilities (see technical specification main hall, small hall )
The building is 12000m2 and the combination of a rebuilt factory and mew construction. It is located by the sea in the centre of Harstad and is seen from sea and most of parts of the town. The entrance, both inside and outside the building, has been decorated by ceramist Unni Johnsen, and the distinguishing feature of the main staircase is a mural by Kajsa Zetterquist. A large fairy-tale painting by Karl Erik Harr hangs near library.
The foyer on the 2nd floor, with its sloping ceiling, a convex wall with Oddvar Løkse's challenging charcoal drawing, the rails that five maritime associations and its panorama view of the sea, is especially beautiful. The public areas on the ground, 1st and 2nd floors are reminiscent of the birdrocks in the area.
The Large Concert Hall is already known as Northern Europe's finest. It has 1000 seats, 620 in the stalls and 380 in the balcony. The orchestra pit can be used during rock concerts and provides standing room for 100 people. The halls access for up to 25 wheelchairs.
The Small Concert Hall has several functions. It can be used for chamber music, dance and theatre productions, meetings and congresses. It has a mobile amphitheatre for 153 people, a 50 more seats in the surrounding balcony. The sound insulation between the two halls allows rock concerts and chamber music recitals to be held at the same time.
